So, I need to have a little venting/ranting session here in regards to Dog Shelters. There is one in my home town hat people blast their facebook and social media pages, saying they are a bunch of murderers for performing the euthanasias that they do. Here’s the thing to the people that make such posts. The facility that they are blasting on the internet and picketing the establishment, is a state run facility, and has to accept any dog that gets surrendered/abandoned at theirs facility either during operation hours or in the overnight drop box that they have set up. Their social media is plastered with posts trying to get other rescues to take behavioral-challenged dogs and getting fosters for all of their dogs that are stressed in kennels. For example a while back they posted a dog for rescue only due to only one person in the entire facility being able to weird with the dog due it not trusting and a having several bite attempts towards everyone else in the facility including volunteers. That dog if it does not find a rescue that can work more closely with it would be euthanized, and they were raked over the coals for the post. If you look at their LRR (Live Release Rate) of dogs that are adopted/transferred versus euthanized, people would see that they are actually not euthanizing as many as people think. The reason people are harsher on them versus less public or private facilities is that they have to release their records due to being a public entity that is supported by state funding. Yet you have “rescues” like PETA that have a far worse LRR yet PETA has a less harsh reputation to most of the public eye that have little knowledge of the veterinary/rescue world.
It baffles me how people can be so rude to those they do not even know, that are willing to belittle and threaten them but will not step in to help the future of the animals in their care.
